File a Complaint

For assistance filing a university report, contact the Office of Institutional Equity at (517) 353-3922. Individuals may bring a support person, such as a counselor, advocate, friend, or parent, to assist with the process of filing a complaint.

The following campus resources are available at no cost and provide confidential support throughout the complaint and investigation process:

  • MSU Sexual Assault Program
  • MSU Safe Place

Michigan State does not limit the time frame for reporting. Even if the respondent is not a member of the MSU community at the time of the report, the university will still seek to provide reasonably available support. Please note, MSU’s ability to investigate and/or take action may be limited in such cases.

Mandatory Reporting

Most MSU employees are obligated to report incidents of relationship violence and sexual misconduct to the Office of Institutional Equity and the MSU Police, but some can maintain confidentiality of such reports if the victim requests it.

Learn more about mandatory reporting at MSU in the Mandatory Reporting Guide.

University Follow-up

In support of efforts to provide an environment that is safe and free of both harassing and discriminatory behavior, Michigan State responds to all reported incidents of sexual assault, sexual misconduct, relationship violence, and stalking.

MSU has an obligation to conduct a prompt, adequate, reliable, and impartial investigation to determine what occurred and to take appropriate steps to resolve the situation when it learns of an incident of sexual misconduct or relationship violence. The OIE process is separate from and independent of a police investigation.

When OIE receives a report of relationship violence or sexual misconduct, a staff member will follow up with the claimant (individual filing the complaint) and respondent (individual responding to the complaint) to provide information about their respective rights and options. OIE also provides information about reporting options, university policies and investigation procedures, confidentiality protections, campus resources, interim and protective measures, and campus disciplinary procedures.

Once a report is made to OIE, MSU will take immediate steps to initiate the investigatory process to determine what happened and to resolve the matter promptly and equitably. For more information about MSU’s investigation process, visit the University Procedures page.
